Bettie S. Smith, 77, of Seminole Drive, Suffolk, Virginia, peacefully entered the arms of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 8 2023 at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was born in Suffolk, VA on February 27, 1946 to the late Lemuel Greene and Rosa B. Smith. Bettie was also preceded in death by her husband, James Smith. Bettie was educated in the Suffolk Public School System; having graduated from East Suffolk High School - Class of 1965. Upon completion of high school, Bettie attended Paul D. Camp Community College for two years, majoring in Business Studies. Bettie was employed with Sara Lee Coffee & Tea for 15 years as a Machine Operator, before retiring in 2005 after 15 years of loyal and dedicated service. Bettie was a devoted member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Suffolk. She was a devout Christian who enjoyed serving and praising the Lord. Bettie leaves to cherish her precious memories two daughters, Sherry D. Ware of Columbia, MD and Benita R. Chinn of Marietta, GA; two grandchildren, Janai S. Ware of Columbia, MD and Bryce James Chinn of Marietta, GA; a sister, Lois A. Slaughter (Charles, Jr.); two brothers, Rev. Lemuel Greene (Judy) and Clyde Edmond (Mary); two sister-in-laws, Sylvia Turner and Brenda Smith; three brother-in-laws, Nathaniel Smith (Elizabeth), Earnest L. Smith (Gail), and Raymond Smith; two uncles, Lewis Steverson (Mary) and John Henry Steverson; a goddaughter, Loretta Wilkins; devoted cousin, Ida Golden; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A public viewing will be held 2:00 - 6:00pm, Friday, April 14, 2023 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will held 12 Noon, Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Robert Hobbs will deliver the message of comfort.
