Bettie Ann Anderson

Chesapeake, Virginia

Bettie Ann Barnes Anderson, 81, of Chesapeake, Virginia, died early Tuesday morning, December 17th at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital.

A native of North Carolina, she was born on February 1, 1943 and grew up in Paterson, New Jersey. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgie Mae and Ben Barnes and her natural mother Victoria Barnes.

Bettie was a brilliant and powerful presence, even as a child growing up in Paterson, New Jersey, co-editor for her high school newspaper at East Side High School; Was awarded a B.A. in Sociology from Hampton University and an M.A. in Social Psychology from Montclair State University in 1970.

Bettie lived a remarkable life. Her upbringing and education prepared her for leadership in many areas, including chairing on the YWCA board of directors; serving executive positions in a number of organizations including The Passaic County New Jersey Office on Aging… and Essex County Community College. Bettie enjoyed her passion of volunteerism; helping with coordinating local, state and national election campaigns. At age of 76, she joined The Peace Corps to serve women in Botswana, South Africa who are suffering from HIV and Aids. 

Bettie was a woman of tremendous faith. She grew up in a Christian household and found the Lord at very young age. She was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Paterson, New Jersey. Later in life Bettie joined Budd Lake Chapel, located in Budd Lake New Jersey where she was a member for more than 20 years. Upon returning to Virginia, became a member of Antioch United Church of Christ in Suffolk Virginia.

To her family and friends, Bettie was a tower of strength, wisdom and love. She was always present for important family events; available to provide guidance and direction… Bettie cared for each and every one of us!

She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Elimu Anderson; grandchildren (Brevin, Maleah, Sean); Godsister, Wanda Best (Lorenzo); a host of nieces, nephews and cousins…and a multitude of people around the world who consider Bettie family.

A memorial service will be held 11am, December 30, 2024 at Antioch UCC. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
