Our Blessing: April 8, 1948 His Victory: November 21, 2021 Bennie Herbert Edwards, 73, of Suffolk, VA, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 21, 2021. He was a native of Suffolk, Virginia and was born to the late Amy Edwards Mayfield. Bennie was preceded in death by his brothers, Romie Lee Mayfield, Charlie Mayfield, Carl V. Mayfield, and Phillip A. Mayfield also his son, Algernon Langston. Bennie graduated from Nansemond County Public schools and enlisted in the United States Army soon after to serve our country. He was honorably discharged in January 1970. He loved reading the bible and shared many bible stories with family, friends or whomever would listen. Bennie could often be seen in various family photos smiling with a bible in his hand or somewhere near him. He loved worshipping and praising the Lord and was a long-time member of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Suffolk, VA. He also was a member of the New Jerusalem Men Fellowship Group, Suffolk, VA. Bennie was a proud veteran who loved his family and loved eating his favorite snack, Lays potato chips. He lovingly leaves to cherish his memories: His loving and devoted wife, Thelma Langston Edwards of Suffolk, VA,; six daughters, Cassandra Edwards Boyd of Hampton, VA, Cheryl Edwards Boykins (Terry) of Suffolk, VA, Tonya Rodgers Myers (Life) of Philadelphia, PA, Tracey Wright of Chesapeake, VA, Tasha Wright of Portsmouth, VA, Marsha Pettus of Virginia Beach, VA, three sons, Bennaire Gibson of Norfolk, VA, Neavrae Gibson (Patricia) of Portsmouth, VA and Alajuwun Langston of Suffolk, VA; four sisters, Mary Estelle Mayfield of Suffolk, VA, Phyllis A. Price (William) of NC, Saprina Jefferson (Johnnie) and Annie McPherson both of Suffolk, VA ; six brothers, Bennie Beamon (Karen), Bennett Jones, Alton Ward (Akuia), Paul McPherson, Prince McPherson, Tracye McPherson all of Suffolk, and Leon Porter of Richmond, VA ; three sisters-in-law, Willie Mae Mayfield and Ineas Mayfield both of Suffolk, VA and Brenda Mayfield of Franklin, VA; three brothers-in-law, Milton Langston of Gates, NC, Robert Edwards and Burtell Edwards both of Suffolk, VA., fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A public viewing will be held 1-5pm Wednesday, December 8, 2021 in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 125 County St., Suffolk VA. Rev. Dr. Robert L. Hobbs will deliver the message of comfort. Mr. Edwards will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Rd., Suffolk, VA.
