Barbara Louise Dillard, age 78, entered eternal rest on June 21, 2022. She was born in Nansemond County (Suffolk), Virginia on December 23, 1943, to the late Willis Holland Dillard and Bessie Lou Howell Dillard. Barbara was raised in the Christian faith. During her early years, she regularly attended Laurel Hill United Church of Christ and Corinth Chapel United Church of Christ, both located in Suffolk, Virginia. She was educated in the Virginia public school system and graduated from Nansemond County Training School in 1961 and attended Norfolk Division of Virginia State College now known as Norfolk State University. Barbara relocated to Brooklyn, New York then to New York City. She lived continuously in New York for 30 years before permanently returning to Portsmouth, VA to care for her parents. Barbara retired from the United States Postal Service after 25 years of dedicated service in New York City and Norfolk, Virginia rising through the ranks from the distribution center to postal carrier to her last position as supervisor. She will be fondly remembered for her easy-going personality and friendly nature. Barbara never married but was a devoted “mother” to her beloved Chihuahuas. She especially doted over her most cherished Chihuahua, “Princess,” who Barbara cared for and treated as the name implies. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, James Holland Dillard (Brenda-also deceased) and Linwood Thaddeus Dillard. She leaves to cherish her memory, one brother, Thurman Lee Dillard of Suffolk, VA, one sister, Darlene Cutler Silmon of Virginia Beach, VA; a Sister-in-law, Dorothy Dillard of Suffolk, VA; nieces, Deborah Dillard, Suffolk, VA; Davina Rumble, Chesapeake, VA; Lauren Coles, Denver, NC; Tiara Gibson, Jacksonville, FL and nephews: Larry Dillard (Deborah), Suffolk, VA; Linwood R. Dillard, Suffolk, VA; Dr. Kenneth Cruz-Dillard, Philadelphia, PA; Ricky Dillard (Shirley), Courtland, VA; and Thurman Dillard, Jr., Suffolk, VA; Daveron Silmon, Virginia Beach, VA; and a host of relatives & friends. Acknowledgement to her special caregivers Deborah Dillard, Earnest & Betty Ruffin, Lela Blanche Gay and Kim Baily who provided love and care beyond what words can express. And special thanks to Charles & Marie Mercer whose care and love was more than as caregivers, they loved her as family. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. in the Melvin J. Blowe Chapel of Crocker Funeral Home, Inc., 900 East Washington Street, Suffolk, VA 23434.
