Anna Marie Ridley Smith

February 3, 1931 — March 15, 2019

On March 15, 2019, God gave Evangelist Anna Marie Ridley Smith, her wings that she would gently and peacefully ascend from this earth with her granddaughter at her side. She was born in Nansemond County, Suffolk, Virginia, and was the only daughter of the late Napoleon and Magnolia Ridley.  Evangelist Smith, known by her loved ones as “RE” was a member of New Saint Matthews Holiness Church, Suffolk Virginia, attended as often as she could until her health declined. She was an avid promoter of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and never missed an opportunity to share His goodness. She often spoke of how God carried and protected her on the highways and byways as she traveled alone in her vehicle with her Bible on the front seat. She often said, “God will take me and bring me, to God be the glory”. Evangelist Marie was married to the late Karoy Smith.  Their union produced two daughters, both of Portsmouth, Virginia, Sharon Higgs and Cynthia Stuckey (Perry, Bennettsville S.C.). She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Lloyd, James, John, Henry, and Charles Ridley. She is loved by three grandchildren, Derrick Higgs SR., Chantney Stuckey, and Cydnee Stuckey. Her legacy continues with five great-grandchildren Derrick Higgs Jr., Deron Higgs, De’Asia Higgs, Nehemiah Major, and Phoenix Robinson. She is also cherished by nieces Gwen Walker, Jean Ridley, and Winifred Pierre- Antoine. Nephews Stanley Ridley, Earl Ridley, Charlie Ridley, John Earl, Eric Lassiter, and Ashley Lassiter. As well as a host of loving cousins’ family and friends.  She completed her education in the Suffolk Public School System. Known for her stylish attire, she was a hair stylist and seamstress.  She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Obici Memorial Hospital.  She was entrusted in her community. She provided care in her home and for those who requested her care for their loved ones. Her love of cooking and fishing brought great joy to her life. She will be remembered for her dedication to God’s work and her faithful prayers. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2019 at New St. Matthew Pentecostal Holiness Church, 213 N. 4th Street, Suffolk, Pastor Jo Mason will deliver the message of comfort. She will be entombed in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will be receiving guest at 4036 Breakwater Drive, Portsmouth, Virginia.
