Ann McDuffie’s life was a gentle song of faith, love, and devotion. She was a heart that cared deeply, a spirit that lifted others, and a presence that made every room warmer. Through trials and triumphs, she stood steadfast, offering kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support to all who knew her.
Today, we gather to celebrate the life of Ann McDuffie, who was called home to be with the Lord on the morning of August 13, 2025. After a long battle with several illnesses, Ann transitioned peacefully, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.
Ann was born in Surry, Virginia, the middle child of nine children born to the late Asbury and Edith Whitney of Ivor, Virginia. She was affectionately known as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was preceded in death by her two sons, Horace Whitney and Levanice Lofton; sisters Eunice Whitney, May Parham, and brothers Eugene Whitney, Charlie Whitney, and Abraham Whitney
She received her early education in the Southampton County School System in Southampton, VA, and furthered her studies at Job Corps in Charleston, West Virginia. In March 1969, Ann moved from Southampton County, Virginia, to Washington, D.C., determined to provide a better life for her children and to begin her career. She was known for her kind heart, selfless nature, and unwavering dedication to her family, always putting the needs of her loved ones first.
Faith in God has always been an integral part of her life. She spent many years at New Bethany Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., serving faithfully as a Deaconess, a member of the Usher Board, and part of the Kitchen Ministry—dedicating her time to helping the community and supporting those in need. Upon returning to Ivor, she joined Ebenezer Baptist Church, continuing her spiritual journey with the same passion and commitment to her faith.
Ann served faithfully at the Brookings Institution for more than 35 years as a Publication Specialist. She approached her work with professionalism, diligence, and a commitment to excellence, leaving a lasting mark on both her colleagues and the organization.
Outside of her devotion to family and work, she was a passionate fan of the Washington Commanders, bringing a youthful spirit and enthusiasm to countless Sundays and lively conversations with friends and family. She also had a deep love for cooking and took great pride in seeing others enjoy the meals she prepared. Another one of her favorite pastimes of hers was playing bingo, which brought her joy.
Ann’s life was a testament to her faith, strength, and love. Her warm spirit and devotion to her family and friends will be cherished forever. Though she is no longer with us in body, her legacy will continue to live on in the countless lives she touched.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 32 years, Allen McDuffie of Ivor, VA; two daughters, Lawanda Copeland of Washington, D.C., and Jacqueline Whitney of Waldorf, MD; her siblings, Mildred Haywood, Roosevelt Whitney, and Refa Stevenson (Calvin); brothers-in-law Carl McDuffie (Joyce), Johnny McDuffie (Vanessa), and Ben McDuffie (Fredricka); sisters-in-law Caroline McDuffie and Virginia White.
She was blessed with eight grandchildren—Tameka, Camille, Christopher, Christina, Shanice, Lamont, Darond, and Andre and eleven great-grandchildren. She will also be fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Ann’s love, faith, and kindness will remain in our hearts forever.
