Andrew Eugene Bynum, born on July 10, 1950, in Suffolk, Virginia, peacefully entered eternal rest on November 15, 2025, at the VA Medical Center in Hampton, Virginia. He was the eldest of nine children of the late Frank and Pearlean (Smith) Bynum.
A native of Suffolk, Virginia, Andrew was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Jr. and Albert Lee Bynum, his uncle, Lynn Edward Smith, and his niece, Tiffany Monique Bynum. He is survived by his Children: James Bynum (Jacksonville, NC), Andrea Bynum (Hampton, VA), and Natasha “Dae” Bynum (Norfolk, VA); their mother, his former wife, Mary Bynum (Suffolk, VA); Grandchildren: Jordan Bynum, Andrew Bynum, Aaron Bynum, Elijah Chrispin, Alanah Chrispin, and Paris Ward; Siblings: Lenora Jones, Ricky (d. Kathy) Bynum, Gaffell “Darrell” Bynum, Deborah (Major) Riddick, Mary Speight; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A proud veteran, Andrew served in the United States Marine Corps for 13 years, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant and earning numerous commendations before his honorable discharge. As a civilian, he returned to his hometown of Suffolk, where he worked at Gwaltney in Smithfield, Virginia, until a medical event ended his employment.
After becoming ill, Andrew settled into a quiet life, finding joy and contentment in simple pleasures while focusing on his health and family. He cherished daily conversations with his son, James, and shared a special bond with his daughter, Andrea, who remained by his side throughout his health challenges. Dae, his “Million Dollar Baby,” affectionately called him “Mr. Cool Breeze” for his calm demeanor in all situations.
With a lighthearted spirit, he often joked about his struggles with technology, like misnaming Alexa “Alexis” and then declaring it didn’t work. He enjoyed relaxing on the porch, discussing world events, and being present for his grandchildren in meaningful ways. These moments of laughter and love will forever remain close to our hearts.
Andrew had a remarkable spirit of discernment. He used this gift to guide, support, and strengthen his family. He believed that true significance lies not in titles or material things, but in the love and connections we share. When asked about his most outstanding achievement, he would proudly say it was his family.
Though his absence will be deeply felt, the family finds comfort in knowing he is free from suffering and reunited with his beloved mother and cherished loved ones who have passed. They take solace in the belief that he walks among the ancestors, watching over them and providing loving guidance.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Mary A. Bynum, who became a friend in his time of need. Christopher Ward, whose quiet acts of service meant more to our family than words can fully express. To the Riddick Family for their consistent love and care throughout this difficult time, and Kyle Graves for his presence and reassurance in our time of bereavement, Shauna Everhart, Charnita Reid, Shavone Harrison Smith, and Monica Fogg for their many acts of kindness and compassion, gestures that will never be forgotten.
