Alma Louise Skeeter Barber, 64, of Virginia Beach, Va. took her wings to be with her heavenly father on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA. Alma was a 1977 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in Suffolk, VA. She attended DeVry University in Atlanta, GA where she met the love of her life Ronnie. She retired from the City of Chesapeake after 15 years of employment. Because she was a Servant Leader, Alma did not sit and rest in retirement but rather continued working with the Senior Services of Southeastern VA agency where she could continue serving those in the community; especially the elderly, by taking them to their doctor’s appointments and delivering Meals on Wheels. If she ever thought someone needed anything, she was there to offer her assistance. Alma was asked by her agency to speak about the Senior Services of Southeastern VA agency on one of the local television stations in the Hampton Roads area. With great pride, Alma expressed how the agency provided services for the community and her passion for helping the elderly population. Alma was an extraordinary cook and made the best pies and cakes. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She was known as “Mama” by many people who instantly gravitated to her. Alma was a member of St. Paul Church where she was a faithful choir member until her health began to decline. Alma was preceded in death by her mother, Myrtie Mae Skeeter; father, Joe Henry Owens; brothers, Frederick Skeeter, Jr., Calvin Skeeter, and Phillip Skeeter; sister, Sylvonnia “Evelyn” Skeeter Lee. Alma was a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Ronald “Ronnie” Barber; 2 daughters, Randi Barber and Toni Barber-Jefferson (Eric); 3 granddaughters, Mikayla Barber whom she raised from birth her “third daughter”, Trenten Jefferson and Heaven Glover; grandson, Eli Jefferson; sisters, Leandrey Mason (Jethro) and Quay Sawyer; brothers, Durmand Skeeter, Elder Howard Lee Skeeter (Marilyn), Jerome Skeeter (Barbara), Nathaniel Skeeter (Linda), Theodore Skeeter and Michael Everrett; brother-in-law, Clarence Lee; sister-in-law Pamelia Boone-Skeeter, aunts, Kathleen Simmons, Lennora Skeeter and Marice Griffith; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Sherrie Hill, Valerie Allen, Joyce Brown and Tarsha Stith for their love, care and thoughtfulness shown to her throughout her illness; to her Co-workers at Senior Services for calling and texting words of encouragement and love. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2022, 12:00 p.m. at St. Paul Church 619 Spruce Street Suffolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made in Alma Louise Skeeter Barber’s name to the American Heart Association at https://www.heart.org or P.O. Box 840692 Dallas, TX 75284-6692. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
