Alan Roscoe Saunders, Sr.

October 9, 1952 — September 3, 2020

Alan Roscoe “ROC” Saunders Sr. was born on October 9th, 1952 to Alphonsa Saunders and Marjorie Virginia Barnes Saunders. He was educated in the Suffolk Public School System. He graduated from Forest Glen High School in 1973. After graduating he entered the United States Army. He transitioned into the Army Reserves successfully becoming a PROMINENT and RESPECTED Drill Sergeant. After retiring from the United States Army, Roscoe took his perfected skills and joined George Washington University Hospital located in Washington D.C. where he served as a Special Police Officer for 19 years. After his 19 years of service with GWU, he accepted a position at Medstar Washington Hospital Center and during the 14 years of his career while at Medstar Washington Hospital Center he lead the Elite Honor Guard Team. A few of those Elite honors included the National Police Week Parade, The Legendary Chuck Browns Homegoing service, and including many years of the Auxiliary Police Interfaith Memorial Services located in New York City. In the 33 years of his career as a Special Police Officer he became A Mentor, A Role Model, A Friend, and a guide to many he came in contact with, he was highly respected and loved by his peers. In 1977, while at Drill Sergeant school, he met the love of his life Gloria “Puddin” Hernandez. Roscoe married his longtime sweetheart, Gloria on June 7th,1982 in Alexandria, VA. During their union Gloria embraced his 3 children, Alan Jr, Lamont, & Nikka. In 1990, Alan and Gloria welcomed their fourth child, Victoria Nicole. Their love, commitment, and dedication to each other is unbreakable. The bond they created will last for eternity. Roscoe gave his life to Christ at an early age. He had a passion for singing for the Lord and singing anywhere else he went. Along with that, he had many other interests but everyone knew he loved coming home to Holland. Aunt Nellie’s would be one of his stops before, visiting and spending time with his Father Alphonsa. He also loved spending time with his family, especially his cousin Junie. He truly enjoyed playing pool, spending time with friends, computer games and being the life of the party, but his main focus was making a “GRAND ENTRANCE” wherever he went. No matter if it was the grocery store or a gala. He was the happiest surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family. Roscoe went home to be with the Lord on September 3rd, 2020. His smile, contagious laugh, witty sense of humor, and “LARGE PRESENCE” will be truly missed. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 41 years, Gloria Hernandez Saunders; his sons Alan Roscoe Saunders Jr. (Lizeth); Lamont Antwon Saunders; his daughters Nikka Saunders-Gatling (Angie); Victoria Nicole Saunders; grandchildren Chelsea Saunders, Aireon Leary, Adora Saunders; great grandchild Elijah; parents Alphonsa Saunders and Marjorie Virginia Barnes Saunders; siblings Julie Laverne Langston(David); Reginald Bernard Saunders, Vekesha Bazemore (Travis), Alvento Saunders (Danyale) and a host of nieces, nephews relatives, and friends. We will remember the lessons he taught us to never be afraid, always have integrity, never be phony and to live life to the fullest just like he did. “HE DID IT HIS WAY” A viewing will be held 2-7 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2020 in the Melvin J.
