Bernice Porter

Bernice Porter, 98, of Newport News, Virginia transitioned Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at the age of 98. Bernice was born in Nansemond County, VA to the late Benjamin and Mary Mayfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Porter; six children, Shelly Porter, Alice Harris, Clyde L. Porter, Mary V. Reid, Alton P. Porter and Jacquelyn P. Kelly; three sisters, Cherry Kearney, Lucy Mayfield and Ellen Mayfield; three brothers, Sylvester Mayfield, Lewis Mayfield and Albert Mayfield.Bernice was an active member of Tabernacle Christian United Church of Christ, Suffolk, Virginia until the time of her illness. She retired from Planters Peanut, Suffolk, VA.She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Clarice Rudisell, Arlington, VA; two sons, Melvin Porter, of Hampton, VA and Benjamin F. Porter (Johnella) of Fort Washington, MD; She has 28 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.A celebration of life will be held 12:00 p.m. December 2,2017 at St. Timothy Baptist Church.
