GeorgiaArtisMayo entered quietly and peacefully into eternal rest on Monday, August 14, 2017. A native of Nansemond County (now Suffolk), Virginia, she was born on January 23, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Percy Lloyd and Lucy Artis. She was predeceased by her siblings- Jasper Artis, Virgie Taylor, Marie Cassell, Beatrice Holland, Carolyn Lane, P.L. Artis, Jr., and Elvin T. Artis. She was educated in the public schools of Nansemond County and graduated in 1937 from Nansemond County Training School. After graduating, she moved to New York where she made her home in Jamaica (Queens) for many years. She met and married the late Douglas Mayo. To this union four sons were bornJames Donald Mayo, Walter Mayo, Stanley W. Mayo, and Kevin L. Mayo, all who preceded in death. She loved her family and sacrificed much to ensure that their needs were met. She was retired and was employed for many years at Citi Group Bank in New York, NY. After retirement, she returned to her roots and moved back to Holland Community, Suffolk, VA. Mrs. Mayo join Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in her youth and served faithfully until she moved to New York. While residing in New York, she was a member of Amity Baptist Church, Jamaica, NY. Upon her return to Virginia, she reconnected and continued her membership at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. Mrs. Mayo was an avid gardener and loved to work in her yard. The grounders of her home were adorned with beautiful flowers and plants. She often said that gardening was her hobby and one of her favorite pastimes. She was also an excellent seamstress and made her own clothes during early adulthood. She leaves to cherish her memory, three grandchildren, Christopher S. Mayo, Chantel Mayo, and Kimmel Mayo; five great grandchildren; three sisters, Thelma Faulk of Suffolk, Mary Scott-Davis of Chesapeake and Wilhemenia Jorden of Point Harbor, NC; two daughters-in-law, Mae Mayo of South Carolina and Lorita W. Mayo of Suffolk; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. We are grateful to God for her life and for its longevity. We will miss her patience, her kindness, her wisdom, and her thoughtful ways. We bow in humble submission to our Heavenly Father who does all things well. A celebration of life will be held noon August 18, 2017 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 6100 Holy Neck Road.
