Virgie Alston Rodgers

December 3, 1936 — May 9, 2017

Virgie B. Alston-Rodgers, 80 was born to the late Earnest E. Banks and Maude Copeland Banks in Nansemond County (now Suffolk, VA). She was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Joseph and Benjamin Banks. Virgie was educated in the Nansemond County Training School where she graduated in 1954. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Bloomfield College in Montclair, New Jersey. At an early age, she accepted Christ and was baptized at Laurel Hill United Church of Christ. She was actively involved in different ministries at Laurel Hill UCC and Pulaski Baptist Church where she was First Lady. Virgie was a member of Epsilon Theta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Ministers Wives and Widows of Tidewater and Past President of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Sharon Baptist Association. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Rev. Dr. Robert E. Rodgers; two daughters, Tshaitu Z. Davis of Sacramento, CA and Karen Alston of Syracuse, NY; one son, Percel Alston of Upper Marboro, MD; four grandchildren, one great grandchild; three sisters, Rosa B. Hicks (Ronnell) of Suffolk, Rev. Dr. Arlie B. Shropshire of Patterson, NJ and Rev. Mary B. Lockley (Harold) of Detroit, MI; one brother, James O. Banks of Suffolk, VA; two aunts, Katie C. Knight and Hilda C. Abrams both of Suffolk; one uncle, Enoch C. Copeland (Jean) of Suffolk, VA; host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A celebration of life will be held 12:00 noon Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Laurel Hill U.C.C. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
