Elizabeth W. Green

August 9, 1923 — March 9, 2017

Elizabeth Wood Green, 93, departed her earthly home courageously and peacefully early afternoon on March 9, 2017 after an extended illness. She was born on August 9, 1923 in Como, NC to the late Frank and Lillian Ricks Wood. In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her faithful and loving husband, Woodrow Green, Sr. of 59 years; four brothers, Charles Wood, George Wood, Joe Wood, John Wood; and two sisters, Martha Morings and Emma Cross.Elizabeth attended the Newsome Grade School in Southampton County, VA where she graduated in 1937 as the Class Salutatorian. She could still recite the entire speech she delivered during the school's ceremony until her illness last year at the age of 92.Elizabeth was raised in a Christian environment and received the gift of salvation at an early age. She was united in Holy matrimony  to the late Woodrow Green, Sr., and from this union of love, they were blessed with four children. She was a noble woman, strong-willed with a quiet and humble demeanor, and a loving spirit. She loved the Lord and was deeply rooted in faith, and reminding you often, "God is in control." Though God first in her life, family was priority. She instilled in her children the importance of family and education, the need for an unwavering relationship with God, and becoming productive and respected members of society.Early into the marriage, her dearest husband requested she not become employed; but rather stay home and be a full-time homemaker. As a Domestic Engineer, one of the most challenging jobs to perform, Elizabeth executed her duties outstandingly with much love, ease and pride. She was a devoted wife and nurturing mother. In her children's opinion, because of the love she showed towards all children for whom she cared, she was the #1 Child Caregiver in Hampton Roads. On any week day if health and weather permitting, you could find Elizabeth enjoying her favorite hobby, "yard work". She, also, favored sewing, arts and crafts, reading, and painting which she deemed as her occupational therapy. During her illness, playing dominoes with her son-in-law, Richard, became a favorite pastime which she earned the title, "Champ."Serving faithfully as an active member of East End Baptist Church for more than fifty years brought her joy. She was a dedicated deaconess for over 30 years, and a Sunday school teacher. In January 2001, Elizabeth was honored by Pastor Dr. Mark A. Croston, Sr., and the official board as Deaconess Emeritus for the many years of service for the Lord.Elizabeth leaves to celebrate her life through her wisdom, nurturing spirit, and most of all her devotion to God and family are her children; Woodrow (Naomi) Green, Jr., Elizabeth (Richard) Andrews, Linda Green-Jones, Milton (Yvonne) Green, Sr.; sister, Estella Jones; grandchildren, Roderick (Cassandra) Andrews, Millette Green, Edward Jones II, Milton Green, Jr., Demond Ferebee; great grandchildren, Ryne Andrews, Maya Andrews, Taylor Smith; God-daughters, Tracey Burton, Lorraine Smithers, RoseAnne Valentine; sisters-in-law, Virginia Cuffee; Mattie Wood.
