Mattie S. Russell

Mattie S. Russell was one of God's precious gifts born to the late Robert and Viola Russell on May 4, 1925 in Holland, VA. Mattie was educated in the Holland School System. She met and married Raymond Alexander. From this union, she gave birth to two children, Barbara Vaughn and Robert Veon Alexander.In 1962, Mattie migrated to Brooklyn, NY. She had a burning desire to become a nurse. She went to nursing school and became a LPN nurse. She worked in this capacity at Coney Island Hospital for over 30 years caring for the sick. She retired in 1989. She enjoyed her retirement; traveling, going out with her friends; going to the senior center and talking on the phone with her friends. As quiet as it is kept, she loved to go to the casino (smiles). She adored her family dearly.God called Mattie home on December 6, 2016 after a brief illness. She will always be remembered as a courageous person. Mattie is preceded in death by her two sisters, Cynthia Best and Robert Mae Bailey and one brother, Samuel Russell.She leaves to cherish her legacy her son, Robert Veon Alexander (Juanita), Brooklyn, NY; daughter, Barbara Alexander Vaughan of Brooklyn, NY; four grandchildren, Robert Vaughan (Elizabeth) of Virginia Beach, VA, Renee Vaughn of Brookly, NY, Nicole Alexander of Brooklyn, NY and Robert Veon Alexander II of Brooklyn, NY; one great-grandson, Michael Vaughan of Brooklyn, NY and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.A celebration of life will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 15, 2016 in the Melvin J. Blowe chapel of Crocker Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in Mt. Sinai Baptist Church Cemetery. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
