Doris loved her church and her church family. She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland since 1941. Her passion revolved around the Sunday School and the Vacation Bible School. She and her friends could be seen making lunches and merriment in the church's kitchen. She was in the first class that included females to be ordained as Deacons by Rev. Dr. Alfred C.D. Vaughn at Sharon Baptist Church. She loved Rev. Vaughn for his forward thinking on the ordination of women. Of all the studies that she pursued, this was the one that she considered to be her greatest achievement. She was a member of the Birthday Circle and continued to send cards to its members until her health prevented her from so doing. She actively supported all the activities of the church until her move to Atlanta with her daughter Doris in 2000.She was an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles. When she first came to Baltimore she took courses in dressmaking. She remained a lifelong learner and took many classes driven by her varied interests at local colleges including Community College of Baltimore and Morgan State University. She was an active member of her community and always help to organize "The Annual Night Out" which would find her and her neigbors on Harlem Ave outside and socializing. She was a 'stay at home" mom and began her working career after her daughter, Gloria, began high school. Her long volunteer career started with her friendship with her neighbor, Sarah Lightfoot, on the surgical floor at Provident Hospital in Baltimore. She later worked as the librarian at Provident Hospital, loving the technological advances the hospital made with audio tapes covering many subjects so that the community could access the information by phone. She retired from this position when her husband Ira became terminally ill. She was attending him when he passed on in 1983.
