Mrs. Lillian Smith Chapman,87, entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 11, 2016 at Sentara Obici Hosptial. She was born on January 7, 1929 to the late Sallie Ann Smith and John Alexander Smith, Jr. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Louis Chapman; daughters, Bettie James, Floria Beale and Jackie Chapman Evans; sisters, Bertha Phillip and Mary Smith; brothers, Norris Smith and Samuel Smith; grandchild, Paula Smith; great grandchild, P.L. Chapman; aunts, Katie Howington and Matilda Brock. Lillian attended Nansemond County Schools and was a Private Duty healthcare provider for 15 years. She was also the neighborhood candy lady. She attended St. Paul Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Board, Ushers’ Board and sung in the choir. She had a special love for knitting and crocheting. Lillian leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Ella Williams (Bennie) of Jersey City, NJ and Brenda Sykes of Portsmouth, VA; one son Robert Smith (Sabrina) of Norfolk; one sister, Annie Dildy of Suffolk; son-in-law Essex Evans (Jackie Chapman Evans-D);30 grandchildren; 74 great grandchildren; 50 great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A celebration of life will be held 12:00 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2016 at St. Paul Baptist Church. She will be laid to rest in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
