Mary "PeeWee" B. Martin

Mary “Pee Wee” Byrd Martin, 75 transitioned to her heavenly home from Sentara Obici Hospital. She was a native of Suffolk, VA and the daughter of the late Harry Byrd and Lenora. Mary graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1958 and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in 1962 from St. Paul’s College. She received her Masters Degree from Norfolk State University in 1989. Mary retired from the Suffolk Public School System after 37 plus years as a teacher, Reading Specialist and Guidance Counselor. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Mahan and served in various ministries. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Melba Williams (Herman) of Haymarket, VA; her son, Lloyd G. Martin, Jr. (Robin) of Boulder, CO; her grandson, Herman Williams, IV; two granddaughters, Marley Martin and Traci Alexa Williams; one sister, Evelyn Edwards (Morgan); one brother, Harry Byrd (Kathleen); one goddaughter, Mary Kristen Fojtik; a devoted friend, Frederick Chapman; three “Special Girls”, Santiera Yearling, Nakari Blunt and Kori Blunt; and many, many friends. Zeta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the funeral home. The family will be there until 8:00 p.m. for a visitation with friends. A funeral service will be held Friday, May 20, 2016 at First Baptist Church, 112 Mahan Street officiated by the Dr. Steven G. Blunt. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
