Lillian Frances “Ma Shields” Shields of Wellons Street died Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabuku5tatuib Center (Nansemond Pointe). She was a native of Halifax County, NC and the daughter of the late Jimmy Shields and Ada Hall. She was preceded in death by her sister, Martha Mae Shields; her rother, James Albert Shields. She received the District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaver (the only woman to receive from the Boy Scouts), and was a Cub Scout Leader for Troop #302.  She also received the District Old Timer Award. She was a member of the Busy Bee Garden Club. She attended Paul D. Camp Community College at age 75. Ms. Shields retired as a machine operator after 40 plus years at Planters Peanut Company. She was a member of the American Women Business Association. Ma Shields was a member of Antioch United Church of Christ for 60 years where she was on the kitchen committee, Pastor’s Aide Society, Gospel Choir, Senior Choir, Stewardship Board, Women’s Fellowship, Christian Board of Education, and the Bible Class. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Ruby E. Evans of Suffolk, VA; one son, Kenneth Lamont Shields (Debra Jean) of Hampton, VA; one brother, James Williams Shields of Chesapeake, VA; three grandchildren, Kene Briana Shields, Tonya Bishop and Kevin Evans; five great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; nieces, Lillian Conyers of Virginia Beach, VA and Yvonne Brackett of Norfolk, VA; nephew, Dana Shields of Florida; other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Antioch United Church of Christ, 900 Hull Avenue officiated by Rev. Jarvis A. Jones. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1110 Custis Road, Suffolk. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
