Mary E. Williams of 8107 South Quay Road, Suffolk departed this life on Sunday, March 20, 2016. A native of Nansemond County (now Suffolk), Virginia, she was born on February 23, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Garrett and Iola Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James G. Williams and her sister, Iola A. Williams.She was educated in the public schools of Nansemond County and graduated in 1939 from Nansemond County Training School. She was retired and was employed as a caregiver and domestic worker.Ms. Williams was a member of Laurel Hill United Church of Christ where she was a member of the Women's Fellowship and a former member of the Senior Choir. She was a teacher in the Laurel Hill Church School and Vacation Bible School for over 40 years. She was a member of the Christian Education Committee. She received training in Christian Education at Franklinton Center, Bricks, NC and was a graduate in the class of 1955.Ms. Williams was a member and served as the secretary of the Holland Home Demonstration Club. She was the organization leader of the Holland Dutchman 4-H Club for 35 years. She received several awards for outstanding 4-H leadership for the City of Suffolk and the Southeast District.Ms. Williams was a member of the Nansemond County Training School/Southwestern High School Alumni Association where she served as historian.She leaves to cherish her memory, one sister, Marian W. Ferebee of Norfolk; one brother, Ralph L. Williams (Ida) of Suffolk; several nieces and nephews, five of whom she helped rear, Lorita W. Mayo, Ray D. Williams, Mary A. Williams, and Carlton L. Williams (Sheila) of Suffolk and Linda W. Hill (Rev. Elliott) of Windsor; sister-in-law Olivia A. Williams of Suffolk; numerous cousins and friends.The victory celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 25, 2016 at Laurel Hill United Church of Christ, 8001 South Quay Road, Suffolk with the Rev. Dr. Carl L. Sweat, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Laurel Hill Church Cemetery. The body will lie in repose prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the church.
