Phillip Roger Joyner Jr., 67,  departed this life on February 6, 2016 in Augusta, Georgia. He was the second child born to the late Philip R. Joyner, Sr. and Ethel L. Hill Joyner.He was a member of St. Mary's A.M.E. Zion Church of Sebrell, Virginia.Philip graduated from John F. Kenned High School, Suffolk, Virginia in June 1968. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Army and served for eight years as an Air Traffic Controller. After an honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from Air Traffic Controller School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. As a certified Air Traffic Controller, he held positions in Fayettville, North Carolina and August, Georgia. After twenty-six years of service with the Federal Aviation Administration, he retired from Bush Field Airport in Augusta, Georgia in September 2004.Philip was married to Bessie Jacobs Joyner for forty-seven years. To this union three children were born, Quintony Joyner (Tiniya), Philip R. Joyner, III and Tamla Joyner.He also leaves to cherish his memory: four grandchildren, Deonte, Kadeem, Dajah and Naomi; sister, Gloria W. Rutledge of Clinton, Maryland; and a brother, Kelly Joyner of Suffolk, Virginia.He was preceded in death by two additional siblings: a brother, SGT Charles E. Joyner (1979); and a sister, Ethel L. Holland (2008). Philip continued his professional associations after retirement. He was an instructor at Bush Field Airport, Augusta, Georgia, and served as a committee member of the General Aviation Commission.His favorite hobby was restoring classic cars. He was a member of the True Classic Cars of Augusta. He participated in many car shows with The Cruizin In Classic Car Club, Inc. and won many awards and trophies.A celebration of life will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at First Baptist Church,  Mahan Street. Dr. Blount will officiate and Rev.George Smith will deliver the eulogy.  He will be laid to rest in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
