On September 27, 1960 Doretha Jones Holland and the late Joseph Lee Holland was blessed with a baby boy they bestowed the name George Alvin Holland. He was the youngest and the tallest of his siblings. He's mostly known by his nicknames Al or 6'9 and for a jovial smile. He was predeceased by his father Joseph Holland and sister Linda Powell.George aka Al attended John Yates High School. He could be spotted in the crowed halls due to his tall statue, his head bobbin over top the other students. Because of his fame in basketball at John Yates he was selected to attend Massanutten Military School in Woodstock, VA. After graduation he moved forward to the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) as the top basketball recruit in 1981. During his 4 year tenure at UDC he was a member of the 1982 UDC Disvision II Championship team and the 1983 Division II Runner-Up team. Later in life after several years of courtship, he entered into holy matrimony with Tappata Hoggard on the most loving day of the year February 14, 2008; as a result three additional members were added to the Holland family. Al accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He attended several churches throughout his life time. Whichever one he attended he was known to be punctual. Until his demise he attended Church of the Lord Jesus Christ Apostolic Faith with his mother.Al leaves to cherish his memories; wife/love of 17 years Tappata Hoggard Holland, step-son PJ Artis, daughters Alicia and Taija Holland and son Alvin Holland. His siblings-sisters Phyllis Holland (Howell) of Norfolk, VA; Jermaine Hoover-Leggett (Russell); brothers Randell Holland of Warfield, VA; Frederick Holland (Shelia) of Richmond, VA; Reginald Holland (Diaphine) of Greensboro, NC; Gregory Johnson (Temika) of Florida. Favorite nieces and nephews-Tyrinda Carter, Krissy Majette, Michael Powell, Reginald Cross and Fernado Holland. Brother-in-law Warren Eure. Godfather Richard Hollis. His close friends whom he called his Boys Tyrone Chapman, LaShun Williams, Bernard Gholston, Billy Hillard and Johnthan Hale and a host of family and friends.A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 6, 2015 at Tabernacle Baptist Outreach Center. 3621 Nansemond Parkway. He will be laid to rest in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
