Edith LassiterEdith Byrd Lassiter, 80, a Suffolk native, transitioned into eternal life on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the Lynnmoore Assisted Living in Richmond, Virginia. She was the first of six children born to the late Harry A. and Lenora P. Byrd. Edith was predeceased by her husband, Vernon G. Lassiter; a sister, Audrey M. Byrd, and a brother, Brig. Gen. Melvin L. Byrd.Edith received her early education in the Nansemond County (Suffolk)) Public School System. She graduated in 1951 from the East Suffolk High School. After graduation, she attended Virginia State College (now Virginia State University).She leaves to cherish her devoted, loving and caring memory two sisters, Mary B. Martin of Suffolk and Evelyn B. Edwards (Morgan) of Richmond; one brother, Harry A. Byrd, Jr. (Kathy) of Huntersville, NC; many nieces, Melba Martin Williams, Pamela E. Christiani, Donna L. Byrd, Jennifer Edwards, Latitia B. McReynolds, Melanie Byrd, Rosslyn Singleton and Dr. Mykyle Byrd Vaughn; five nephews, Michael Byrd, Lloyd G. Martin “LG”, Melvin L. Byrd, Jr, Harry A. Byrd, III and Kristopher Byrd; a devoted sister-in-law, Diane D. Byrd of Chesapeake, VA; other relatives and friendsA funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 28, 2014 in the chapel of Crocker Funeral Home officiated by the Rev. Jarvis Jones, pastor of the Antioch United church of Christ. Entombment will be in Meadowbrook Mausoleum on Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk. Family and friends will be received at the home of her sister, Mary B. Martin, 118 Ashford Drive, Suffolk.
