Pope was the fourth of ten children born to John S. and Annie B. Everett. In preparation to teach beauty culture, she obtained additional education at the Willie Whiddick’s Beauty School (Portsmouth, VA) and Norfolk State University (then the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University) while working at a local beauty shop owned by her aunt (“Big Thelma”) named Thelma’s Beauty Shop (1944). In the early 70’s she joined Greater Sweet Beulah Holiness Church under the leadership of Bishop Madison G. Copeland where she served as the financial secretary on the Trustee Board, president of the Gospel Choir, treasurer of the Missionary, MG Copeland Fellowship, and Gospel Choirs, president/vice president of Missionary and Usher Board. Mother Pope was Assistant Superintendent, Sunday school teacher, a member of Lottie Jordan’s Missionary Circle, Pastor’s Aide, and Deaconess.
